U.S. retail sales slipped 0.9 percent in December as demand for goods fell nearly across the board. The bright spot for the home furnishings industry, receipts at furniture stores climbed 0.8 percent.
The U.S. Commerce Dept. said retail sales excluding cars, gasoline, building materials and food service fell 0.4 percent last month following a 0.6 percent increase in November.
Sales last month were held back by a 1.6 percent drop in sales of electronics and appliances, and a 0.3 percent decline in clothing sales. Online sales dropped 0.3 percent.
